Case Study: River Wall Integrity Surveys for Major Demolition Works
Location:
Riverside Development Project, UK
Project Type: Pre- & Post-Demolition Structural & Scour Surveys
Contractor: UK Diving Services Ltd
Project Overview
UK Diving Services Ltd (UKDS) was appointed to conduct a comprehensive series of underwater investigations to support the demolition of significant riverside buildings. The project required a rigorous "Pre-Start" survey to establish a baseline of the river wall’s condition and a "Post-Completion" survey to ensure no structural damage or debris accumulation occurred during the demolition phase.
UK Diving Services Ltd
Our scope included detailed structural condition reporting, scour assessments, and the provision of full marine safety and traffic management services to protect both the dive team and public river users.
Scope of Services
1. Underwater Structural & Scour Assessments
-
Pre-Demolition Baseline: Divers performed a full-length inspection of the river wall to identify existing defects, such as cracking, spalling, or reinforcement corrosion.
-
Post-Demolition Verification: Following the removal of the riverside structures, a secondary survey was conducted to confirm the wall’s continued integrity and verify that no demolition debris had entered the waterway or settled against the foundations.
-
Scour Risk Analysis: Using a combination of diver-led tactile probing and 2D/3D sonar imagery, we mapped the riverbed profile to detect any signs of undermining or scour holes that could be exacerbated by the changes in surface loading.
2. Marine Safety & Access Services
Given the active nature of the waterway, UKDS managed all aspects of navigational safety:
-
Safety Boat Operations: A dedicated, fully equipped safety boat was on-station throughout all diving operations to provide immediate rescue capability and worker protection.
-
River Traffic Marshals: Our marshals coordinated the movement of vessels in the vicinity of the dive site, ensuring that all river traffic was aware of the sub-surface works.
-
Navigational Signage: In line with CRT requests to maintain a safe working exclusion zone, we deployed "Pass with Caution" signage at strategic intervals of 150m and 300m from the site. This provided ample warning to oncoming boat traffic to reduce speed and minimize wash.
Results & Deliverables
The project was delivered with zero safety incidents, ensuring the demolition contractor met all environmental and structural compliance requirements.
-
Comparative Reporting: A detailed "Before and After" report featuring high-resolution imagery and sonar data to definitively prove the condition of the asset post-works.
-
Compliance Assurance: All surveys were conducted in accordance with HSE diving at work regulations and followed CS 469 / BD 97/12 standards for scour assessment as minimum
